Clinical Nurse Specialist, Acute Pain Team, MidCentral Health,
Palmerston North, NZ
I am a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Acute Pain Team at Mid Central Health (MCH) with 14 years experience in pain management. I completed a Masters of Nursing through Massey University in 2007 and a prescribing practicum in 2009. I am a committee member of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Society (New Zealand) and NZNO representative for senior nurses at MCH. I became a member of the NZPS executive Council in 2015 and continue to be actively involved in this role. In 2018 I led the review of the New Zealand Pain Management Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework which was completed in 2019. I am currently a Nurse Practitioner candidate at MCH.
Registered nurses are the largest group of health care professionals working across many practice settings, therefore are key providers of health care and regularly come into contact with people experiencing pain. It is essential that nurses' pain management knowledge and skills are of a standard to ensure the best possible outcomes for people with pain and their family/whānau. The "New Zealand Pain Management Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework for Registered Nurses" was accepted for endorsement by the National Nursing Consortium in 2013 and in 2018 a review of the framework was undertaken. This presentation will highlight the changes made to the framework and provide education on how it can be implemented into practice.
